The Oregon State University NROTC was created during World War II to help meet the Nations demand for competent and tactful Naval Officers.  Many traditions still remain with the battalion.  Unit activities go on through out the year which gives members of the battalion a chance to participate.

The focus of the Army ROTC program at Oregon State University is leadership development. Students learn problem solving techniques, decision-making skills, planning and organizing skills, interpersonal communications skills, professional ethics and responsibilities, and other management and leadership skills. Leadership labs and field training exercises supplement classroom work with practical leadership training and experience. Military Science courses complement all major areas of study by broadening the student’s basic education and helping to prepare students for positions of leadership in the Army and economy. As students earn their academic degree, they also earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.

The United States Army operates a Military Science and Leadership unit of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Portland. The program is a cooperative effort between the Army and the University. It provides prerequisite leadership training qualifications for students desiring to earn appointments as Second Lieutenants in either the United States Army, the United States Army Reserve, or the Army National Guard. Army ROTC students pursue a University degree in an academic discipline of their choice, incur no obligation during their first two years of participation, and are not members of the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard unless they are ROTC scholarship winners. In addition to on-campus training, Army ROTC offers instruction in adventure training, (i.e. rappelling and orienteering). Cadets may also participate in ROTC's varsity sport, Ranger Challenge, which promotes physical conditioning, military training excellence, and esprit de corps.
