Originally established as a private school set in a heavily-wooded campus, the Danville Military School started out in 1920 in a building in Main St. The task of running and administering the school was passed on to the control of the Presbyterian Synod of Virginia a year after. Then, in 1933, military training was taken out of the curriculum that the school follows. It was during this period that the school was renamed Virginia
Presbyterian School. The school regained its military instruction in 1933 after it went back to using its original name.
