Defunct Military Schools
The Admiral Billard Academy is a Navy Preparatory School which opened its
doors to cadets on the 19th of September, 1936. It started out with
eight faculty members and 35 cadets; 13 of which are first-class men. It
graduated its first batch of 12 first class cadets the following year.
The military set-up utilized by the academy is that of a company that is
comprised of two platoons. There were four buildings constructed for the
academy-- the Moore mansion, otherwise known as “The Ship”, and an
outbuilding referred to as “The Gym”.
A year after the academy was established, a fire ignited the top floor of
the ship. The cadets, together with the New London Fire Department, tried
to appease the fire, however, the the building took in irreversible
damages and remained uninhabitable for a while. The cadets sought
temporary shelter until they were able to move in to the Palmer House, a
residence acquired by the Academy.
The Academy was closed down on June of 1953. It barely left a trace; the
infrastructures built for the Academy was either demolished or modified
beyond recognition.

Named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, Admiral Farragut Academy is
an exclusive for male military preparatory school which specializes in
Naval training. Its original campus was founded in Pine Beach, new
Jersey, in 1933. Living up to its motto “Success is Never Accidental”,
the school has indeed provided a means for its cadets to excel in military
pursuits and as such, the need to establish a new campus arose in an
effort to accommodate more students who wanted to get involved in military
training.
So in 1945, another Admiral Farragut Academy campus was founded in St.
Petersburg. Both campuses continued to provide quality military training
to its cadets until such time in 1989 that its military training services
became co-educational. In 1992, the two schools became separate
corporations under the laws of the respective states in which they reside.
The first campus was closed down in 1994 due to its dire financial
straits. However, the other campus, which is based in St. Petersburg,
remains active as of date. Besides the military training that it offers,
it also encourages its cadets to choose from an array of recreational
sports like baseball, volleyball, wrestling, golf, tennis, swimming,
sailing, and soccer.

In 1819, Capt. Alden Partridge, a military man who previously worked as
superintendent of West Point, founded the American Literary, Scientific,
and Military Academy. This institution adhered to a form of education
that patterned into civil education. According to Partridge, this form
of education aims to uphold an “extended system of military education and
of a general diffusion of military knowledge.” The idea behind the
adaptation of this system is to imbibe in the mindset of the cadets a
deeper understanding of the military culture that he claims would be very
beneficial for them when they enter a military career.
In 1825, the academy run by Partridge moved to Middletown, Connecticut.
After four years, it moved back to Norwich, Vermont, but in 1834, the
academy changed its name to Norwich University.
Few data about the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy is
known because its existence was very brief. But on the average, the
Norwich University, which is more or less the academy's successor, is
known to still closely adhere to the educational principles of its founder
and forerunner.

The academy's international reputation for excellence in secondary level

Formerly carrying the name Breck Mission and Farm School, the Breck School
traces its roots back to the year 1886 when its founder, Rev. David
Griffin Gunn, established it as an Episcopalian military school in
Minnesota. Its namesake was an Episcopalian missionary and educator,
James Lloyd Breck, who gave high regards for education among the youth.
The school initially started out with nine boys and ten girls as its
students. These students were the farm children in the area who wanted to
learn the English language while gaining practical knowledge about the
military life.
The school experienced its peak around the 1890's, but dire financial
constraints forced it to closed down. It reopened in the 1950's and had a
change of administration. The new administration decided to drop the
military stint in the school's program.
